RAID-ohjain Microchip Technology SmartRAID 3254-16i/e PCIe x8 4.0 SAS-4 SATA

The Microchip SmartRAID 3254-16i/e is a high-performance RAID adapter with tri-mode SAS/SATA/NVMe support and a PCIe Gen4 x8 host interface. Built on Microchip's 5th generation SmartROC 3200 controller, the 3254-16i/e offers 16 media-facing ports for internal connectivity and includes technologies such as DirectPath PCIe switching and Dynamic Channel Multiplexing (DCM) for efficient aggregation of expander-attached drives. The adapter provides native HBA modes for lowest-latency memory-based PCIe storage and includes hardware-based Trusted Platform support and controller-based encryption for SAS, SATA, and NVMe media.

Advantages

The SmartRAID 3254-16i/e delivers high throughput and low latency thanks to PCIe Gen4 x8 connectivity, DirectPath integration for NVMe performance, and near-100% link efficiency from DCM on 24G SAS infrastructures. It supports multiple RAID levels and native HBA operation, integrates platform-level security with a hardware root of trust, and offers controller-based encryption plus SED management. Management and integration are simplified through standards like PLDM/Redfish RDE, Intel VPP and SFF UBM, along with diagnostic tools for signal integrity analysis.

How to use

Install the SmartRAID 3254-16i/e into a PCIe Gen4 x8 slot on a compatible server motherboard and connect internal drives to the media-facing ports or to an expander-attached backplane. Configure the adapter firmware and RAID volumes using the vendor-provided management utilities or standards-based interfaces (PLDM/Redfish). For NVMe deployments using DirectPath, ensure proper BIOS and platform support for PCIe bifurcation/switching where applicable. Enable encryption and Trusted Platform features through the controller management tools if required by your security policy.

Recommendations

For optimal performance, use a PCIe Gen4-capable host and 24G SAS infrastructure when aggregating expander-attached drives. Reference Microchip's ChipLink Diagnostic Tool during integration to verify signal integrity and consult the adapter firmware release notes for compatibility with specific drive models and backplane configurations.
