The Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro STM is a compact, lightweight prime lens designed for the EOS R mirrorless system. It combines a wide f/1.8 aperture with Dual Sensing Image Stabilizer that provides up to 5 stops of shake correction and offers a maximum magnification of 0.5x (1:2), enabling detailed close-up and general-purpose photography. The lens uses an 11-element/9-group optical design, supports STM autofocus for quiet operation, and accepts 52 mm filters.

Advantages

This 35mm macro lens delivers sharp image quality in a small form factor and is easy to carry for street and travel photography. The f/1.8 aperture gives good low-light performance and controllable depth of field, while the Dual Sensing IS improves stability for handheld shots. STM autofocus ensures smooth and quiet focusing during stills and video. The 0.17 m minimum focusing distance and 0.5x magnification let you capture fine textures and details.

Suitable for

Close-up and macro photography of small subjects
Street and travel photography where portability matters
General-purpose everyday shooting and environmental portraits
Video work requiring quiet autofocus and steady handheld footage

Key specifications

Lens mount: Canon RF
Maximum aperture: f/1.8
Minimum aperture: f/22
Optical construction: 11 elements in 9 groups
Maximum magnification: 0.5x (1:2)
Closest focusing distance: 0.17 m
Filter size: 52 mm
Weight: 0.305 kg
Autofocus: STM (stepping motor)

How to use

Mount the lens on a Canon RF-mount camera and set the camera to the desired exposure mode. Use the wide f/1.8 aperture for subject isolation and low-light situations, or stop down toward f/8–f/11 for increased depth of field in macro shots. For close-up work, move the camera to achieve the 0.17 m minimum focusing distance and use manual or autofocus as needed; STM provides quiet focusing for video. Enable in-camera image stabilization or the lens IS to take advantage of up to 5 stops of shake correction when shooting handheld.

Recommendations

For best macro results, combine a smaller aperture (higher f-number) with steady support or short bursts of low ISO and adequate shutter speed. When shooting handheld in low light, rely on the Dual Sensing IS and keep shutter speeds within the stabilizer’s effective range. Use a lens hood and 52 mm protective filter to reduce stray light and protect the front element.

9/10

Loppuarvio: With the other three current RF lenses being as large, heavy and pricey as they are, it's great to see Canon offering something that's still very capable but far more accessible alongside them. The RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is certainly capable of very g...
