The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is an affordable, compact prime lens designed for Canon EF‑mount SLR cameras. With a 50mm focal length and a wide f/1.8 maximum aperture, it delivers sharp images with pleasant background blur while remaining lightweight and easy to carry.

Advantages

This lens offers improved sharpness, higher contrast and reduced distortion compared with older designs. The large f/1.8 aperture allows more light to reach the sensor, helping to shoot in low‑light conditions without a flash and to obtain smooth bokeh. It uses an STM (stepping motor) autofocus actuator for quieter and smoother focusing, and its compact size and 160 g weight make it convenient for everyday use.

Suitable for

Portraits with natural background blur
Low‑light photography without flash
Street and travel photography where compact size matters
General-purpose shooting with a standard 50mm field of view

Key specifications

Lens mount: Canon EF
Focal length: 50 mm (prime)
Maximum aperture: f/1.8
Minimum aperture: f/22
Lens structure: 6 elements in 5 groups
Closest focusing distance: 0.35 m
Maximum magnification: 0.21x
Filter thread: 49 mm
Weight: 0.16 kg
Colour: Black

How to use

Mount the lens on a Canon EF‑mount camera body until it locks. Use aperture priority or manual exposure modes to take advantage of the f/1.8 maximum aperture for shallow depth of field and better low‑light performance. Use AF for quick focusing with the STM motor; switch to MF when precise manual focus is needed. Keep the closest focusing distance of 0.35 m in mind for close subjects.

Recommendations

For best results in portraits, position the subject several metres from the background and use the widest aperture (f/1.8) to emphasize subject separation. When shooting in low light, increase ISO as needed before relying on flash to preserve ambient light and bokeh quality.

10/10

Loppuarvio: The EF 50mm f/1.8 II has long been due a replacement and the arrival of the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM has been met with great interest from the Canon faithful. The addition of the STM motor delivers a much quieter performance, and although its not entirely silen...
