The Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is a compact prime lens for mirrorless cameras that combines a short telephoto focal length with close-focusing macro capability. Its bright f/2 maximum aperture produces soft backgrounds for portrait work, while the 0.5x maximum magnification and 35 cm close-focusing distance allow detailed macro shots. Image Stabilisation rated to 5 stops helps keep images sharp in low light, and the lensʼs light 0.5 kg weight and modest dimensions make it easy to carry.

Advantages

This 85mm macro lens offers a versatile balance of portrait and close-up performance: a wide f/2 aperture for subject separation, 0.5x magnification for macro detail, and a 5-stop IS system for handheld shooting in dim conditions. The optical design of 12 elements in 11 groups ensures controlled image quality, while the STM motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus. The 67 mm filter thread and compact size make the lens practical for everyday use.

Suitable for

Portrait photography with soft background separation
Macro and close-up photography of small subjects
Handheld shooting in low-light situations thanks to image stabilisation
Travel and event photography where a compact, lightweight lens is preferred

Key specifications

Mount: Canon RF
Focal length: 85 mm
Maximum aperture: f/2
Minimum aperture: f/29
Lens construction: 12 elements in 11 groups
Maximum magnification: 0.5x
Closest focusing distance: 0.35 m
Filter thread: 67 mm
Weight: 0.5 kg
Colour: Black

How to use

Mount the lens on a Canon RF-mount mirrorless camera and set the camera to the desired exposure mode. Use the wide f/2 aperture to isolate subjects in portrait work, and stop down as needed for greater depth of field during macro shots. To capture fine detail, move in until the subject is within the 0.35 m closest focusing distance and use the focus ring or autofocus with STM for smooth focusing. Enable the 5-stop Image Stabilisation when shooting handheld in low light or at slower shutter speeds.

Recommendations

For best portrait results, shoot at or near f/2 to achieve a shallow depth of field; for macro detail, use smaller apertures and steady support or increase ISO as needed while relying on the built-in IS for stability. Use a 67 mm protective or polarising filter to protect the front element and control reflections.

10/10

Loppuarvio: Canon already has an RF mount 85mm prime, but given its eye-watering price, it's no surprise that a second RF 85mm f/2 lens has joined the ranks. Unlike its older sibling, it's small, lightweight and, more importantly, far more affordable. There's a lot...
